Description
The Isaac M. Wise Temple is one of the oldest synagogue buildings in the United States. Built in downtown Cincinnati in the 1860s, it was formerly called the Plum Street Temple, and had Isaac Mayer Wise as its first rabbi (Rabbi Wise also founded Hebrew Union College, the Rabbinical school for Reform Judaism).
This building is an important and beautiful Cincinnati landmark both because of its history, but also because it's beautiful Byzantine-Moorish Revival architecture. This architectural style was popular for synagogues in the 19th century in Germany, but those buildings were destroyed. Only one other synagogue of a similar style remains besides the one in Cincinnati. As such, this building is a National Historic Landmark.
